second hand curve 8520

If I was to buy a second hand curve 8520 would I be able to unlock it, even if i didn't know the service provider

Typically, yes...see this FAQ:

However, there are circumstances where you would not be able to -- for instance, if someone has exhausted all of the unlock attempts, then there is no further way to unlock it (well, the factory can, but that's pretty unusual to say the least).
