security wipe

I want to securely wipe my Blackberry Bold 9700 OS 6 so that the data is totally unrecoverable before I dispose of it. Can someone explain how the built-in wipe function works (e.g., does it overwrite all data with random data multiple times?) and whether it renders all personal data totally unrecoverable? Thank you.

Re: security wipe

To wipe the BlackBerry, go to options/security/wipe, and follow the instructions. As far as how it works, I beleve it overwrites the data, but i am not 100% sure. You would really, and I mean REALLY have to know what you were doing to recover the data. This would be extremly unlikely though. The wipe would be appropriate for your situation.

Re: security wipe

If you enable encryption first, before you wipe the device it will overwrite everything. It takes hours, though. If you do that it could sit there wiping for 2-10 hours depending on how much data is there, but it will be completely unrecoverable.

Re: security wipe

I already wiped my BB 9700 before encrypting it. If I turn on encryption now, and then wipe it again, will it securely wipe all the personal data that was ever on the phone? If not, and I have missed my opportunity to securely wipe it by the method you described, what other options exist? Thank you.

Re: security wipe

No, it overwrites all the memory on the device regardless of what's on it. Just make sure you remove any media card that's in the device before you encrypt it. Otherwise you'll never get access to the data on the media card.

Re: security wipe

Just to be clear, the following sequence will securely erase all personal data (emails, calendar entries, phone logs, SMS, notes)?

1. wipe

2. encrypt

3. wipe again

If so, that answers my question. I don't think I have a removable memory card but I'll check and destroy it if there is one. Thanks.

Re: security wipe

Yes. That will make everything completely unrecoverable.
