This could be either a software or hardware issue.
You could try cleaning the optical trackpad
or take the device to the store for testing.
Software options: Are you seeing a spinning clock looking icon when you notice the freeze?
If so a software reload may be in order. The store can do this for you too.

I understand. You could remove apps you're not using. If this doesn't help the only other option is a software reload.
The store can do this for you too.
You can also do a battery pull to reset the device, but I don't think that will be a long term solution.
