I've just been advised that my Blackberry Curve 8310 version 4.5 is incompatable with my new Playbook for email, that is, I cannot download the bridge, use bluetooth or otherwise tether the device to my smartphone for bbm or email. Unfortunately, I learned of this AFTER I laid down $600 for the 32gb version. Any other curve owners out there with a new Playbook and what have you been able to do about this?

Just to concur here.
The Curve 8310 doesn't have enough onboard memory to support OS5 - that's why it isn't avaialble. I have an old Pearl with the same problem, which I gave to my neice a little while ago.
Unfortunately, the only way to get around it is to get an OS5 phone.
If you don't want to spend out, you could grab an 8330 from eBay - these are upgradable to OS5:
and then grab OS5 following these instructions:

Thanks! I wanted to upgrade next year when the QNX OS is anticipated to become available so the ebay option is a good interim suggestion - do you know if the upgrade to OS5 is free?

Thanks - I am searching for a suitable phone. In the meantime, I am severely limited in my ability to use the Playbook outside of my home, as I don't have any connection to the internet unless I am logged on to my ISP here. Free wifi hotspots seem to be a thing of the past. For those who are unable to tether to their smartphone network, how are you accessing the internet when away from home?
