I've just got a Playbook from my mother (she upgraded to the 64Gb one for her) and I did a secure wipe to start from scratch with my own Blackberry ID etc.
Having done this ALL of the default apps (photo, vidoe, music, maps, marketplace etc) have been wiped! All that's left is the web browser and I can't seem to download apps through that.
I tried the Desktop software to restore the apps but the "Applications" link in that disappears the moment the software starts up.
Solved! Go to Solution.

do the following to reset via debrick method as wipe will remove more items
First I would like you to do a Back Up of your PlayBook using your computer and BlackBerry Desktop Software.
This can be downloaded for free from http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/
After the Back Up is complete I need you to unplug your PlayBook and then push and hold down the Power Button until the unit Force Powers Off.
Now, while Desktop Software is still open on your computer and the PlayBook Powered Off, Connect the PlayBook to your computer.
You should see and error screen from Desktop Software pop up that has the options to Retry, Update, or Cancel.
QUICKLY choose the Update option.
This will erase all the information off of your PlayBook and Re-Write the Software back onto it. Once it's complete your PlayBook will need to go back through the setup wizard, and you can then perform a restore using Desktop Software to return your information. The only thing that won't come back after the restore are the apps that you downloaded from App World but they can be easily Re-Installed using the My World feature in App World.

I called RIM's tech support and they gave me an answer as to what's happening. The update server is undergoing maintenance today which normally doesn't affect end users but this time something's gone wrong.
When we've wiped our tablets the, forgive me if I get this slightly wrong, update process means that we're getting a corrupt version of the OS delivered to us.
RIM tell me that when the issue is resolved, and it's currently being worked on, that we should try and update our tablets again through the Blackberry Desktop Software to get a full version.
If, like me, you're not seeing the "Applications" link in the Desktop Software then this reappearing could be an indication it's working again.
Hopefully this will fix things for us some time today

I hope so, but I am not sure if RIM fix the problem so fast... my solution is to turn it off and wait until the update 2 comes...
