Parents: Parental Controls for the PlayBook

RIM realizes that many of us use the PlayBook not just for work, but as a person tablet as well. I have my 64G PB and during the fire sales in 2011 I purchased two 32G PlayBooks for my two kids. One issue I had with the iPhone and iPOD my kids have is that I have no parental control on them. Sure, I can set levels that prevent certain items from showing up, but they can turn it back off.

On the PlayBook running OS 2.0 or later, you can block Apps in App World by setting a parental control. Get you PB on the internet and open the App World app. Once open, simple use the top-down gesture to open the applications setting bar. There you will find the link for the content settings. Open it up. You will see that app world now rates the applications with G, T, M, and A. Simply select the rating you want then turn on the lock (upper right of the screen). Set a password and you are good to go. This will prevent access to apps that are rated higher than what you have selected.

Granted this only helps with content control in App World, but its a start. Its more than I have been able to do with Apple products.

Since mobile devices, like the PlayBook, are consider single user consumer products, you will not find any kind of controls that work like profiles on a computer.

To control access to certain internet sites you can invest in a good quality wireless router that allows you to block URL addresses. Some manufacturers are beginning to look at providing wireless routers that allow you to block URL addresses based on a devices MAC ID. This is a great feature for families.

I found a service from OpenDNS which gives very good controls for home and office, some routers have the service built in and if it doesn't there is a workaround posted in their site, it's only a matter of changing the dns ip in the router.

I have been using it for a while and is very good.  For more information go to http://www.opendns.com/

I forgot, the best part, it's free!

You can try this web filter, it has full features for parental control. It can block sites by URL or keywords and it's password protected. http://www.aobo-porn-filter.com/

No. It requires a Windows OS in which to run. Aobo does not appear to control at the router level but within browsers installed in Windows machines.

It was a rhetorical question,  but thanks for the contribution.
