Ubuntu/Linux and transfering files between playbook

Hi,

Sorry I am new but have been doing my head in the last 24 hours. Saturday purchased the blackberry playbook, got home and tried to use the USB cable to transfer music files etc between playbook and ubuntu computer. However this appears impossible, surely there must be a way to do this. Normally phones etc appear as a mass storage device so I have no issues however this does not appear to be the case with the playbook.

Thanks for any advice.

Re: Ubuntu/Linux and transfering files between playbook

it shows up as a network drive in windows 7.

You might be better off setting up the playbook on WiFi and sharing it to transfer files as Desktop mnager is not supports on Linux yet that I am aware of.

Re: Ubuntu/Linux and transfering files between playbook

Eeks I do not have wi fi at home (I had to go McDonalds to do the start up). I guess I will probably have to borrow somebody's windows computer to get the USB. That is annoying about Linux not being supportive of the Desktop manager, I did not think this was going to be a problem as I have not had a problem with only using Linux with other phones. If you have it activated, you should be able to get a wifi router on sale for about 30 bucks these days and enjoy transfers at home.

Re: Ubuntu/Linux and transfering files between playbook

Hiya!
I tried for roughly 2 months to make a Linux machine running Ubuntu (lucid) to run any Blackberry software. Unfortunately it doesnt want to cooperate. I gave up on it, I cant see the Playbook being any different sadly, Maybe out of curiousity I will fire up my Linux machine and see if I can make it work one of these days.

Re: Ubuntu/Linux and transfering files between playbook

Simple!

On the Blackberry Playbook

1) Go to SETTINGS > USB CONNECTIONS >

    Select - CONNECT TO WINDOWS

Select - FILE SHARING - ON

Select - PASSWORD PROTECT - OFF (you can enable, but for this easy purpose, leave off)

2) Go to SETTINGS > ABOUT > NETWORK

Write down the USB IPv4 ADDRESS

3) Connect the Playbook with the USB Cable

On your Ubuntu PC

1) Go to PLACES > CONNECT TO SERVER

2) Select TYPE > WINDOWS SHARE

2) SERVER IP - Type in the Playbook USB IPv4 ADDRESS

3) Select CONNECT

You should see all of the folders (Music, Videos, Photos, Print, etc......)

Drag and Drop to your hearts content!

When you are finished, simply TURN OFF FILE SHARING unless you have used a password

The shortcut will still be there on your Ubuntu PC, so you would not have to repeat the whole setup again

Hope this helps!

Re: Ubuntu/Linux and transfering files between playbook

Hi!

Don't get intimidated by the different steps that Linux requires. Usually things that seem impossible on the surface are actually pretty easy with Linux.

In this situation I did the same thing as "ozmacguyver" above, with a few differences, everything worked fine for me.

I'll go over my steps in case they help anyone (I hope they do).

1. On the Playbook, in Storage and Sharing set USB connections to Connect to Windows. Select File Sharing On and I set a password.
2. I went to Settings, About, Network and wrote down the IPv4 address. Then connected the Playbook with the USB cable.

3. In Linux (Ubuntu) I'm using KDE so I opened Dolphin (the file browser) and went to Network. Here I clicked on the Add New Folder wizard.
4. In Add New Folder I picked Microsoft Windows Network Share.
5. The screen that popped up asked for Name, server and folder. I found the name in Storage and Sharing, Network Identification, Properties, Tablet Network Name. Server was the IPv4 address, and for folder I just typed in "/" to go the highest directory on the Playbook.
6. The new folder I made showed up in Dolphin, Network and I was able to access my media on the Playbook.

Thanks ozmacguyver, your solution worked for me.
