BlackBerry Push SDK importance and usage

 Hello there,

As far as Blackberry Push Service was revealed I've studied the documentation about this feature and came accross several questions:

1. BB Push SDK. Is it correct to say that the main purpose of this framework is to help you effectively create server-side part of your push application. There are certain requirements for development enviroment as described in docs(servlet container, rdbms, java). But what if I'm running a .Net server for example? Or technology other than java. Does that mean that I couldn't be able to use the SDK?

2. Is the push SDK required part to write push application? Or can I write and handle https post request to PPG(BlackBerry Infrastructure) on my own ?

Could someone please clarify me these moments!

Thanks in advance.

Re: BlackBerry Push SDK importance and usage

The BlackBerry Push SDK is provided as a means to help a developer create the server side portion of a push application.  If using the Push SDK, the server side application would need to be created in Java.

However, you can create the server side portion of a push application in any language you like if using a different IDE.

Re: BlackBerry Push SDK importance and usage

Is there any describtion about the commands to send to the server (to push something)?

I've had one before but do not find it again.

Bullety, have a look at http://docs.blackberry.com/en/developers/deliverables/1180/development.pdf

ch 15.

It might have what you need.

Re: BlackBerry Push SDK importance and usage

Thanks sonicboomboy,

but does this also work for BIS push?

I am wondering because I got a password from RIM in the push-services mail but I don't know where to set it in the sample-application you mentioned.

Re: BlackBerry Push SDK importance and usage

As far as I understand, there is a kind of web portal and you have to be provided with the corresponding url, where you are going to apply different settings to your push app(mechanism work, time, etc) . To login you should use the provided credentials.

Yes, this is the portal login.

But in the application line, I got an password also (near the source IP).

I think this needs to be transmitted to the BlackBerry servers when requesting a push - or not?

What's then the sense of this password?

Re: BlackBerry Push SDK importance and usage

The password prevent other push developers from pushing notifications to your users. The username tells RIM what port to push the notification to. This port was sent in the email that has your password in it. This is the port your app must listen for http requests on.
