Biometric security - fingerprint scanner

With the Biometric and authenticator APIs is this possible to create through code and algorithms or does the phone need other hardware to function properly?  I seen that there is one on the app world but it's not for security, I would love to work on one but I would need to know if this is possible to do without any additional hardware.

 

Any input would be wonderful.

Good luick with that one.  Maybe you can get a license from an SDK or have them port there SDK to the platfrom of choice.  Found this that might be a lead:

hi I have to develop an app for blackberry which reads the fingerprint and analyses the finger then do the further action.

I am total begginer could you plz help me to use the fingerprintscanner API

I am developing on the PlayBook and we do not have that API yet.
