Alerts for text messages and low battery

There are two things that I am having problems with. The first is when the battery get low on my Z10 I get no warnings before it dies. I will be talking and it just goes dead, I have never had a phone before that this happens usually there will be a warning the the battery is getting low. Second problem, when talking on the phone and a text or email arrives is there someway to set up the phone to give an alert so that you know you have received a message.

Thanks
