I have to take issue with JSanders recommendation to remove the battery while the device is on, which I have seen in several responses to various issues.
Abruptly removing power with the device ON is an open invitation to file corruption within the OS. The OS does not get a chance to properly close any open files.
This is just a bad idea with any computer system.

Well, you're wrong in this case.
When the device manufacturer recommends it for certain actions, I'd trust them above and beyond myself and you.
I take exception with your exception-taking to my comments!
(All that aside, there are times that simply powering down, remove battery and powering up might be the solution... or powering down, and backup with no battery removal at all. And, there times that stopping all process and powering up from start is needed).
