Are you able to download and install any apps from BlackBerry World since you did the upgrade?

 

Do you have a good data signal > 4G or 3G? (4g or 3g means data service is not available - voice only.) And does it have the BB logo beside the signal?  Like this, top right:

It could be that you literally are not connecting to the server.

 

Another alternative to try to download Skype is to go to BB World on your computer, go to the Skype page.  Then, share the link with yourself using email.  Click the download link in the email from on your device.

Sorry -- I missed the part about your Gmail not working.  It sounds like you probably do have a connection issue. Check your connection as I suggested above.  If you aren't connected, from the home page of your device, go to Settings > Network Connections > Mobile Network.  Toggle both Data Services and Mobile Network off and on again.    Give it a few minutes, then try going into BB World again to download Skype.  If you have WiFi access, that may help as well.
