OK, so I tried manually connecting, this showed exactly the same symptoms as before.

 

I've now moved from trying a BT Home Hub 2 to the latest BT Home Hub 4 - this works perfectly.

 

So still no idea whether the problem is the Z10, the hub or a combination of both, but at least I can report back that the latest hub works without issue.  Maybe others will find that useful.
