Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

There is a possibility that when the wireless network tower shuts down for maintenance reasons, your phone will be searching....and searching....and searching for signal untill it finds one to lock on it. The longer it searches, the more battery it drains. Your battery temp is also a bit on the high end - 70F or 75F should be ok unless the weather is extremely hot and the phone is in your pocket -  that may bring it up to maybe 80F.

In some cases, some apps can cause the same problem by running in the background (even if you know you closed them) and they can use the CPU, keep open internet connections, turn ON your GPS, etc....

If a battery pull and reboot didn`t solve this, you may wanna consider reloading your OS

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

Let me thank everyone for all their useful insights.

I am happy to report that i found out the root cause of my issue. In one word - Gmail.

I had 2 gmail accounts set up on my phone. i just deleted both of them and pulled out the battery and set it down to cool.

In about 5 mins i popped in the battery the phone started and its been working fine since.

Its not even warm anymore, the temperature is around 70 - 72 F.

I am not yet sure what Gmail was doing for it to cause this issue. My sync interval was set to 30 mins. Its been that way since I have had the phone.

Maybe something was changed by Google on the Gmail servers that caused this.

The other user who was faciing the same issue. Try doing the same. Just delete your gmail accounts completely.

I will try configuring them again and see if it still continues to be an issue.

I will report back.

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

This is just to confirm to the people in this thread is that it indeed was Gmail.

Today morning I re-configured my gmail account to my phone. As soon as the account was configured, my phone started heating up again. The battery started draining faster. in 2 hours I was almost empty from 80%.

Does anyone know what is happening with Gmail? Is anyone else facing this issue too?

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

I don't know what's up with Gmail either, but late yesterday afternoon, I received about 40 backlogged emails from the past 30 hours of Gmail... they must have had some hiccup in their system.

Congratulations on solving your problem! You were presented with quite a few valid possiblities to resolve the issue and I'm sure it took a fair amount of patience, persistence, and perseverance to fix your battery drain issue.

As for the gmail...no, I don't use it so I can't lend any support there. Or possibly...try changing your gmail password? Good luck!

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

Unfortunately, I haven't been so successfully with my Z10 yet.

So far I've tried these suggestions from the posts with no improvement,

1) battery pull with wall power applied

2) deleting contacts from outlook sync and then re-booting and replacing contacts

3) deleting gmail account

I also noticed that I have contacts on there from BB Link that I'm not really using once I started up the outlook sync over the air.  Maybe I should delete those to see if they are the problem.

I haven't tried out the deletion of calendar items from outlook as that process was a little more involved.  Hopefully I can try that one today.

Also, I noticed yesterday that when I opened voice control there was a message that my contacts were being indexed.  This was there before and after I did the contact removal in #2 above.  This morning that message is now gone when I start voice control, but the battery drain seems to continue.

What is really strange to me is that I can't think of anything that has changed in my configuration or usage that coincides with the timing of when this battery drain started.  As a long time BB user and advocate (seemingly about the only one left in my circles) this issue is making me loose faith very quickly...

Both of those actions will cause more data to flow, sync and further battery drain.

Also, go to your Settings > Security > Diagnositics and turn off the "send diagnositics..."

and

Settings > Location Services and turn off Traffic Data Collection and Location based ads.

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

Thanks for more ideas to try,I hadn't checked those settings lately, but all 3 (diagnostics, traffic data, and location based ads) were all turned off already, so those aren't it.

Today I don't have the "indexing contacts" message on voice control, but yet 4 hours after taking the unit off the charger this morning, I'm down to 37% battery already.

Something has changed with this phone on Sunday and I'm running out of things to try...  I've spent way too much time on this problem this week....

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

There are a number of free battery apps which will tell you the power being consumed at any one time or over an average. The best is Battery Guru and is not free, but worth every penny.

And you should download the app "Taskmanager", as it will show you and you can close any app or process running in the background. Likely there's something going on of which you are not aware.

Re: Z10 Battery Suddenly Draining Faster

I did load a couple of the free battery apps (Battery booster) and as far as I can tell, they don't provide much useful information.  The graph over time, well I know the battery is going dead over a few hours already and they don't seem to have anything that would tell me why it is going dead.  Maybe I should invest in  Battery Guru if it can tell me why the battery is being drained.

I did load the Taskmanager app but I'm not sure if it is telling me anything useful.  Does it not show apps that are running, only those running in the background?  I was trying to test out what it was showing me by starting some apps and then asking Taskmanager to refresh and it doesn't seem to show the apps that are running in the foreground.

After letting the Z10 sit on my desk for a while (attached to the charger), I did see that Taskmanager had a few things showing up.  I'm not sure if these should be there or if I should kill them.  I couldn't figure out how to insert a screen shot here, so I'll just list them.

Calendar Storage

com.android.providers.calendar

Settings

com.android.settings

Skype

com.skype.raider

T-Mobile My Account

com.tmobile.pr.mytmobile

Taskmanger

de.hp.taskmanager

I tried the kill all running apps option and they went away and taskmanager reported that it saved 0kB from the killed apps.

What now???
