Adding Custom menu to phone log/email and making app as startup app

I would like to add a custom menu to

1) phone log

2) Email

to give an option to reverse lookup the phone #/Email address and call a custom app A

I found there are 2 approaches

1) Create a background app B, which will run on start up, add the menus and handle the menu clicks and call the custom app A

2) Custom app A will be made run on start up, based on arguments, it will add the menus and handle menu clicks on a different thread, and when clicked on icon, it will run as the regular app.

Which approach is better? I am new to BlackBerry application development, created few apps, but now trying to integrate an app with the BlackBerry device softwares.

Thank you

Approach 2 sounds better if you have some user interaction involved in the application.

I highly doubt that's possible
