by Retired ‎02-16-2010 09:51 AM - edited ‎02-18-2010 09:19 AM (1,691 Views)

Summary

This article applies to the BlackBerry® Java® Development Environment (JDE).

Procedure

Multiple versions of the BlackBerry JDE can be installed on the same computer, as different BlackBerry JDE versions support different versions of the Java Software Development Kit (SDK) and Java Development Kit (JDK).

For a complete list of supported Java versions based on BlackBerry JDE versions, please review DB-00568.

The following procedure uses BlackBerry JDE 4.0 Service Pack 2, however, the steps are the same for previous versions of BlackBerry JDE. It also assumes that JDK 1.4 and BlackBerry JDE 4.0 Service Pack 2 function on the computer.

Warning: Installing JDK 5.0 may affect other Java applications on the computer. Test existing applications in a controlled environment before upgrading.

  1. Install JDK 5.0. Do not upgrade or uninstall your previous version of JDK 1.4.x.
  2. Update the PATH environment variable to point to the newly installed JDK 5.0. For instructions, please see this article.
  3. Update the JAVA_HOME environment variable to point to the newly installed JDK 5.0.
  4. Install BlackBerry JDE 4.1.
  5. Open the ide.bat file of the BlackBerry JDE 4.0 Service Pack 2 that is located in

    C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry JDE 4.0.2\bin

and insert the following lines at the beginning of the file:

SET PATH=C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06\bin;C:\Windows;C:\Windows\system;C:\Windows\system32
SET JAVA_HOME=C:\j2sdk1.4.2_06

       6. These lines assume that JDK 1.4.x is installed in c:\j2sdk1.4.2_06 and that Microsoft® Windows® is installed in the c:\Windows directory. You may need to modify these values to match your environment if either JDK 1.4.x or Windows is installed in different directories.

       7. Open the run.bat file used to start the BlackBerry Mobile Data Service Simulator in BlackBerry JDE 4.0 Service Pack 2, located in C:\Program Files\Research In Motion\BlackBerry JDE 4.0.2\MDS. Insert the same lines listed above after the first line @ECHO OFF of the run.bat file.

Save and close both ide.bat and run.bat files. You should now be able to run both BlackBerry JDE 4.0 Service Pack 2 and 4.1 on the computer.
