Help Desk Applicaiton - Pop Up Help

For starters, I am not a developer, but can follow directions easily enough.

I recently downloaded, edited and deployed the help desk applicaiton found on this site. When you click the button, it calls the help desk.

I'd like to modify this application, so when you click the application, it pops up and gives you the option to call the helpdesk or email the help desk. Is this something that can be easily done?

Thanks!

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

The code to do this is simple enough, but the background requirements to set up a development environment, compile and sign your applications and so on, is not trivial.  You would, in my opinion, be better trying to find someone to do it for you.

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

int choice = Dialog.ask(..) to ask the question.

Search the forum for sample code to invoke a specific phone number of email, I don't have it handy.

Come back if you need more.

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

This is the entire .java code for the application:

package com.rim.samples.helpdeskdialer;

import net.rim.blackberry.api.invoke.Invoke;
import net.rim.blackberry.api.invoke.PhoneArguments;
import net.rim.device.api.system.Application;

public class MyHelpDeskApp extends Application {

    // The number we want our application to call followed by the extension
    private final String _numberToCall = "1-555-555-5555";

    public static void main(String[] args){
        MyHelpDeskApp app = new MyHelpDeskApp();
        app.enterEventDispatcher();
    }

    public MyHelpDeskApp(){
        //Generate the arguments to make the call
        PhoneArguments phoneArguments = new PhoneArguments(PhoneArguments.ARG_CALL, _numberToCall);
        //Invoke the phone to initiate the call
        Invoke.invokeApplication(Invoke.APP_TYPE_PHONE, phoneArguments);
        //Close our application
        System.exit(0);
    }

}

So should I be adding something at the top and bottom of this? Seems like it should be simple enough.

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

There is a bit missing here, most notably an initial screen.

I recommend that you have a look at some tutorials and sample applications and how they handle the first screen.  In your case I think you want to display a screen with two buttons, and then let the user press it, which is a slightly different requirement to the one I was addressing.  Anyway, look for hello world type demos, and make the appropriate changes.  You might find this useful:

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

Thanks - will take a look and hope for the best! Will be back if I can't figure it out...

If I decide to go the route of having it built for me, where is the best place to look?

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

Don't think you need to do that at this stage given that you have the basics of the application you want.  Spend a bit of time trying to sort it out yourself and I think it should be OK.

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

Going through the tutorials and the concept is straightforward enough, but I think the overall scope and feel of what I want is far outside of my knowledge and available time.

I'm assuming this would be a fairly quick project for a knowledgeable developer, so may be money well spent - depending on what this sort of thing costs Smiley Happy

Can you make some recommendations or is it somehting you and I can discuss in private message?

Re: Help Desk Application - Pop Up Help

Can you add a 'spec' to this Thread, so we can see how much further you need to take your current development?
