How to change sound profile settings programmatically?

I am using the NotificationManager API in my application to register for notifications. Everything is running smooth. The only thing is when the current sound profile in device is set to "Normal", my notifications does not make any beep sound. The sound occurrs only when the profile is set to  "Loud" or "medium". For my requirements, I need certainty that the notifications always get fired with a sound. In the sound profile settings, I saw that my application has registered with sound level "silent". Can I somehow change this settings to make sure that my application notifications always make sound regardless of the sound profile.

Re: How to change sound profile settings programmatically?

since 7.1 you can modify profiles using

before that you can use Alert etc to notify the user regardless of the profile, but i don't advise to do that.
It is up to the user to configure the profile settings as he wants to.
