As far as I know there is no such approach for GPS exists.

GPS service can be in available/temporary_unavailable/out_of_service state (check LocationProvider class javadoc)

to get this state use getState() method of LocationProvider

In JDE 4.7.0 there is a new class net.rim.device.api.gps.GPSInfo

and there are several constants defined for getLastGPSError() method of GPSInfo class.

For example: GPSInfo.GPS_ERROR_NO_SATELLITE_IN_VIEW
