IOException on Connector.open

Having a bit of trouble reading from the filesystem.

In the below example the path variable gets set to "file://store/home/user/pictures/IMG00013-20100806-0937.jpg"

The IOException gets caught but everything inside the variable e is null (checked in debug mode)

String path = "file :/" + ParkingStub.screen.locationlabel.getText();
FileConnection fconn = null;
try {
fconn = (FileConnection)Connector.open(path);

} catch (IOException e) {
// TODO Auto-generated catch block

Any ideas of how I can go about fixing this?
