Legal to extract icon from 3rd party app

Hello,

here's a strange question: Is it legal to extract icons from 3rd party apps installed on the device and display them in your own app?

What's your idea on this?

no, unless you have asked the people who have the rights on this application.

But isnt it then the same if you take a screenshot of the ribbon-view or if you display the icon of the app insalled in your apps?

Re: Legal to extract icon from 3rd party app

well, maybe you should look for a lawyer instead of asking developers.

according to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screenshot#Copyright_issues

most uses will be covered by "fair use" in the US and other states.

see the links on the bottom for further discussions.

some big companies screenshot guidelines are outlined here:

http://www.michaelontech.com/2009/09/legal-use-of-software-or-website.html

if you grab an icon from another application you make it your own, this is, afaik, not covered by fair use.

there are open source icon sets, icon sets with unrestrictive licenses like CC, and others you have to pay for.

i know we pay somebody for icon design, and if you use our icon we'll also pay a lawyer Smiley Wink
