MDS Alternative for enterprise app

[ Edited ]

I am migrating an application built on MDS framework to Java.  The application needs to communicate (via webservices) to the app server located at the enterprise (behind firewall).

With MDS, it was pretty simple to accomplish this. As well as Pushing data to the RIM devices.

With the MSD framework being depricated, what is the best alternative?

Network Transport video tutorials appear to be out of date and continue to list Mobile Data System (MDS) as the only option available for communicating with Internal Application Servers.

From the diagram, it appears that our options are:

  1. Use Wi-Fi access with VPN to connect to Internal Application Server. (Not possible due to location of the devices), or
  2.  Move the Internal Application Server outside the firewall, allowing RIM to communicate with it using a number of available TCP protocols.
What is the preferred network connectivity method for this environment?
Thank you for your help!
