How larges are your background images?
May be the problem is create the background, not displaying it.
Why not take the time for the two operations? 1. createBkg() 2. replacetheBkg()

My images have 35,826 bytes in average, i really would like to see a sample of your idea, can you show me ?
So for your understanding, i have a algorithm to load my images before i use when i change my background.

Sorry, I don't see your pre-load code..
Any way, I use the following code when I want to known the duration for some operation(s),.. task..
long t1 = new java.util.Date().getTime();
/* Some long time task */
long t2 = new java.util.Date().getTime();

Maybe i´m not shine with my problem, the setBackground works fine, ok, i know but the really problem is if you have 7 itens buttons on screen and you change background on focus listener of any button quickly roll the trackwheell quickly, the performance decrease....

I'm noticing no performance decrease
have a navigator screen with 6 focusable bitmaps
if I switch through the bitmaps fast, the background switches also fast
together with the image (I also change the bitmap icon which gets focus)
and I'm using a status field explaining what each tab does
all done using java 5 and tested in simulator and on 9700 and 9550

as I already told you: I have no performance problems with my backgrounds in a Navigator screen,
I can switch very fast back and forth
