In the Developer docs, I read this:
Note: ESNs are only present on BlackBerry smartphones that operate on the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network.
And this seems to say that not all BB's have a PIN. Is this true? If so, which carriers/networks do not support the needed CDMA and thus have no PINs? Also, if a BB has no PIN, then how are people implementing "registration" on such devices? In other words, in general one "locks" the software to the users PIN (etc.), but without a PIN, what can we use?

The ESN is not a BlackBerry PIN. Every BlackBerry handheld has a unique PIN. You can get it by calling DeviceInfo.getDeviceId().
