What's the bb's real OS?

[ Edited ]

Hi there,

I always wonder what is the real OS of BB, like linux is to  dalvik?

Re: What's the bb's real OS?

The 7.1 kernel and those previous (not sure about the very early ones though) were developed by RIM and a lot of the details about it are hard to find. BBOS 10 smartphones and the Tablet OS use the QNX kernel.

Is that right if I suppose the RIM JVM is based on modified WinCE
because early bb all work with a Intel CPU?

As far as I know, the JVM BB uses is developed entirely by Sun Microsystems. I don't think BB has any relation to Win CE.

As it is said bb is based on i386, so the main structure is nothing more than Hardware->BIOS->OS->JVM->System COD->User COD.
ie, there must be some OS inherited to run their own J2ME, Decompress, Encryption, BIS/BES. you know, they could not make it from zero, no one could.

Re: What's the bb's real OS?

It's really not even close to being impossible to build a kernel from scratch. Especially not for a company like RIM with 18,000 employees. Microsoft makes a kernel from scratch every so often. Sometimes they base parts of new kernels on older ones, but the progression from OS to OS has historically been quite detached. Linus Torvalds developed a kernel from scratch. Many kernels were developed from scratch.

Re: What's the bb's real OS?

BB OS is written in C afaik, but as it is closed source there are not many things to learn about it. from a developer perspective you cannot access anything outside the JVM anyhow.
