It is not about settings - it is more about language support.
Does your Blackberry OS support japanese ?
It should be multi-language OS with japanese support.

I am using the simulator called Blackberry 9000 so I am not sure if it has japanese support OS or not.
Here is my code for your reference. I am able to display the Japanese characters if I cut and paste the string to MS Word, it shows こんにちは . However, on the BB it only showed several black squares.
I have a EditText field called textETextField, and my code to display is:
String japaneseStr = getSomeJapaneseStr();
It is pretty simple code so I don't know why it doesn't work?

Blackberry Bold simulator supports only English language.
It is easy to check.
Open a standard blackberry email application and create a email.
Set cursor to the message body field, open menu and select "Switch input language"
Nothing will happen.
But on device OS with other languages support a popup appears to allow to select another language.
