Up until 10.2, my app was able to create shortcuts to invoke the bbfiles app using the URI structure
This would open the Files app to the Documents folder on the device storage.
This functionality remains the same in 10.2
But the following functionality no longer works:
On 10.1, this opens the Files app to the documents folder on the SD card.
On 10.2 and above, this results in the files app opening, showing the spinning circle symbol for several seconds, then force closing itself.
This only seems to happen with the Files app, as opening a file (rather than a folder) on the SD card works perfectly fine Ie. file:///accounts/1000/removable/sdcard/documents/d

I'm not sure that's am officially supported URI. At least, I've never seen it anywhere. Do you have a link for where we mention it?
You can try logging an issue in DIT, but if it's not listed on our official documentation there is no guaruntee it will work ever.
Why not just use the FilePicker?

I found it a few months ago, it was part of a list in the the official documentation of how to invoke native apps via URI.
Unfortunately the file-picker won't work for my use case because the URIs are actually used to create homescreen shortcuts on the user's device.
This particular function was necessary in order to allow users to create shortcuts to folders.
A folder shortcut would basically be a shortcut that invoked the file browser using BBfiles:///folder_path
This functionality STILL works for folders stored locally on the device, but it no longer works for folders on the SD card or a linked cloud storage account. This functionality did work in 10.1.

Just wanting to follow up on this problem, it's still occurring in the latest BB10 OS 10.2.1.2xxx.
I've tried to file a bug report, but the site blackberry.com/jira doesn't seem to be working. It just constantly refreshes itself, so I'm not able to file the bug report.

Please send me a PM with the email you are using for your BBID and I can take a look at your account. That's likely the problem.
