Mark, another question...
Regarding your answer about creating a new product and uploading a playbook release NOW, and then uploading a BB10 release during the event...
Is there any problem if these applications are made with Marmalade?
No problem, Marmalade apps are fine.

I have an iPhone app I want to port. The product/release has to be created during the portathon to qualify.
I just added the metadata today so that I can make the port during the port-a-thon.
Since I added the metadata already, does this mean there is no point in porting tomorrow?
The app/release has to be created in App World during the port-a-thon hours. You could remove the meta-data, rename that old entry to something you'll never use and create a new product during the port-a-thon to qualify.
