You could use the invocation framework to invoke the Phone application.
But the invocation framework still does not support sending SMS. Same as with sending email which still is not supported yet.

I am having trouble on using the SmsTransport for sending simple text messages.
Can someone show me a simple example on how to use the SmsTransport Api for sending text message?

Sending SMS is disabled in current Dev Alpha build. Same as with sending email which does not work either. Seems you have to wait for the final release.

At least in the github native and cascades examples there is no example using SmsTransport.
There is only the API documentation.
