Text-to-Speech ??

Hi all...

i'm planning a new type of application for people with cerebral disease that needs some kind of Text-to-Speech.

For example : I have an input field where a user can input some text with the superior Q10 keyboard :-) and then the device "speaks" this text afer hitting a button...

Does BB10 API/SDK support this out of the box or do i need some kind of 3rd party tools etc.etc. for this ?

If the API/SDK supports this... what is the best plattform for doing this ?? Native ? Webworks ?

Thx.

The best platform to use is the one you are most comfortable/familiar with.

If you have no C++ experience then it will be quite a learning curve to go native.

You can compare the different platforms here (sorry if you've already seen this)...

http://developer.blackberry.com/devzone/develop/platform_choice/bb10.html

The APIs are pretty much the same over all the platforms so that isn't really an issue.

As for the speech stuff this api is supported...

[Edit] Oh and welcome to the forums. :-)

Hi,

I can only post info for the BB10 Native/Cascades platform and the Cascades' accessibility API is supporting text-to-speech in Screen Reader mode.  For example, when you type/compose emails, the content will be read to you if you enable the screen reader mode as well as reading out the letters as you type.

More resources about the Cascades' accessibility API are to be found here:

Re: Text-to-Speech ??

LOL, do you guys actually read your documentation.

I defy anyone to actually get you can do text-to-speech from that documentation!

Re: Text-to-Speech ??

Sorry, if you thought the doc was irrelevant.
I know the link is not about the text-to-speech but it's about BB10's accessbility support to help developing an app with the A11y support. I thought it would be a good reference for hbach1968. No?

Re: Text-to-Speech ??

Possibly. To be honest I couldn't work out what that documentation was on about, it definitely needs some filling out.
I can't speak to relevance but the OP was about text-to-speech API's are there any more apart from the one I mentioned?

Re: Text-to-Speech ??

You are right. Text-to-Speech APIs are not currently available in 10.2 Gold. It is being integrated to NDK for future release but the target is not set.

Re: Text-to-Speech ??

Hi...

thx. for clearing this.

I'm very dissapointed to hear this... it means that we can not use BB as our preffered and exclusive platform.

Thx.

Re: Text-to-Speech ??

What was wrong with my first suggestion of using a 3rd party library?
