extending the MediaPlayer to handle HTTPS sources ?

This is a long shot given my last thread about extending DataSource to handle HTTPS didnt yield to much of a response.  In any case,  I need to now get the MediaPlayer object to some how handle HTTPS sources. I believe my only option is to create my own play() routine..   though I feel I might be now at a lower level than I feel comfortable with. Has any one be able to get MediaPlayer to handle HTTPS (self-signed certificate) connections ?

If not.. can anyone share some source on how to create a simple media player using native core media libraries ?

cheers.
