Creating a self-signed certificate (.p12) results in: keytool error: java.io.IOException: Incorrect AVA format

by Retired on ‎04-15-2011 01:33 PM (2,863 Views)

Problem

When attempting to create a self-signed .p12 file used to sign BAR files, if the common name (CN) contains a comma then the tool will throw the following exception:

keytool error: java.io.IOException: Incorrect AVA format

As an example: Garett, Inc

Solution

To remedy this issue and allow common names that include commas, you just need to ensure that all commas are properly escaped with a backslash:

Garett\, Inc

The above comma-escaped CN will match the Package-Author field of the created MANIFEST.MF file with a value of "Garett, Inc".
