Dev Alpha - App Store not supported in my country

Hi,

I wanted to try a few BB10 apps on my Dev Alpha, but App Store on 10.0.6 told me to screw off, because I'm not in a supported country. I live in Estonia, but I have a Slovak SIM card (Orange), but it's without a BB service.

What can I do to fix this? None of the Estonian carriers offer BlackBerry phones/service.

m.

That's an interesting error message. I wonder if there might have been something mistranslated?

OK, the exact message is "BlackBerry App World is not currently available in your country. Please check BlackBerry.com/appworld for updates."

So, it's a double problem, you're in a nation without any BlackBerry service providers, AND you're using a SIM card with out any BlackBerry service account.

[ Edited ]

The only problem I see is that it matters at all where am I located (since I'm paying with a PayPal account that's tied to a country that offers BIS), and that I need BIS at all to buy applications, (since they're all going to be delivered by wifi anyway and they have no special need for BIS).

But I know we won't change the BB app policy just by ranting about it; the question is, what the heck do I do now?

Re: Dev Alpha - App Store not supported in my country

You could try subscribing to the BIS plan on your Orange SIM and see if that works?

Re: Dev Alpha - App Store not supported in my country

Well, I could, but then why pay $15/month for a device that I can't even use as a phone?

I guess I would just appreciate if RIM would include these requirements / country limitations in their FAQ.

Is there any other repository (besides App World and demo apps on GitHub) for Dev Alpha devices that I could try?

Re: Dev Alpha - App Store not supported in my country

Well, the system requirements for AppWorld are VERY clearly stated, including device models, OS releases, and countries in which the software is supported.

Re: Dev Alpha - App Store not supported in my country

Yes, it states that I need
- BlackBerry App World 3.1 requires BlackBerry® Device Software v5.0 or higher
- touch screen
- access to the BlackBerry® Browser

And Slovakia is on the list of supported countries. I have Slovak SIM card. Therefore it's either bug on the side of Dev Alpha's App World that detects current country instead of country of service; or it's a weird decision of RIM to limit App World to the listed countries, even when you're from a country where provides service.

You don't have access to the BlackBerry browser if you don't have THE BIS data plan on your SIM card.

And, remember, you're on a DevAlpha device? It's an ALPHA, not even Beta, device. Don't even expect it to work in general terms of a normal current-market device.
