Which JDE to use to target specific OS ?

[ Edited ]

I am coming from Android / iOS platforms and at least there , when you want to target an OS you have to use the same or less SDK version. For example if i want to target iOS 4 , i will build with 4.

I believe the same idea is implemented here. However how is it possible that i am using JDE 7 and i am targeting my device which runs OS 5 and the application runs normaly?

I read somewhere that the JDE version will target the specific OS(and higher). Did i read wrong or understood something wrong? Now that i am using JDE 7(the latest for OS 7) what OSs am i actually targetting? All less than 7?

Still can you answer me , why the application i build runs on my mobile?

If we have forward-compatibility , like in all the rest platforms the app shouldnt run right?

Sometimes you can get lucky if you are only using libraries that haven't changed between versions.  It's not a recommended/supported configuration though.
