BlackBerry Widgets are out of BETA!

[ Edited ]

Hi Everyone,

We are very pleased to announce that the BlackBerry Widget SDK and the associated BlackBerry Web Plug-in tooling for Eclipse and Visual Studio are officially out of Beta.

You will also be glad to know that we now have official support for Windows 7 (32/64-bit) with this release.

The latest downloads can be found here:

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/browserdev/devtoolsdownloads.jsp

New features in the BlackBerry Widget SDK include:

- JavaScript Extensions: Full official support for JavaScript extensions where you no longer need to modify the widget SDK template code.  An updated Lab outlining the process will be made available shortly

- Loading screens: You can now specify loading screens that will appear when your user moves from screen to screen or when your application first loads.  The display of the loading screen can also be given transition effects to give more visual appeal to your application.  Loading screens also allow for background images and animated foreground images.

Documentation for the BlackBerry Widget SDK can be found here:

http://docs.blackberry.com/en/developers/subcategories/?userType=21&category=BlackBerry+Widgets&subC...

New features in the BlackBerry Web Plug-in include:

- JavaScript Debugging: You can now debug all of your BlackBerry Widget's JavaScript code using breakpoints, watch windows, AJAX profiling and more

- Simulator Quick Launch: When building your widget, you no longer need to close and re-open the simulator between compiles.  Simply leave the simulator running and your newly built application will be deployed to the running simulator.

- Updated Start Screen: An updated version of the getting started screen has been provided with more targeted content based on the community's feedback

- BlackBerry Toolbar: A new BlackBerry toolbar is provided with quick links to important online content.  Quickly change your current simulator by using the smartphone drop-down list on the toolbar

- Simulator Setup: Additional information about smartphone models and thumbnails are now provided in the simulator selection options to give more information on the device choice

- JavaScript Extensions: Support for adding JavaScript extension JAR files to your BlackBerry Widget

- Eclipse 3.5 Support: The Eclipse version of the Web Plug-in has now been upgraded to use Eclipse 3.5

Documentation for the BlackBerry Web Plug-in for Eclipse can be found here:

Documentation for the BlackBerry Web Plug-in for Visual Studio can be found here:

Re: BlackBerry Widgets are out of BETA!

Exactly where do I download the SDK and the plug in for Visual Studio?  Everytime I try to click on either link, I receive the following:

We're Sorry...

  • You've entered this page in error because you have the incorrect link.

Please make sure that you have the correct link to download BlackBerry software.

Are you downloading the Visual Studio Plug-in from here:

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/browserdev/eclipseplugin.jsp

There is a download link half way down the page.  The Widget SDK is included in the Visual Studio installer.

AH.. I just received the error myself.. I'll get the Web folks to take a look at it

The link for the Visual Studio plugin works, but the Blackberry Wigdet SDK does not.  I tried from 2 separate  pages:

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/browserdev/widgetsdk.jsp

and

http://na.blackberry.com/eng/developers/browserdev/devtoolsdownloads.jsp

Edit:  Just realized I don't need to download the SDK, since it is included with the VS plug-in.
