Blackberry 4.6.1 forcing block display elements to 100% regardless?

I am wondering if anyone can resolve this for me - I have a very simple web page with divs and anchors, and I want to set either a div or an anchor (with display: blockSmiley Wink to a set width and height, but the Blackberry browser is ignoring any width and height css directives on either the div or the anchor and instead forcing the element to the width of the screen.

Has anyone seen this, and if so did you solve it?

What I am trying to do is set an image to be a clickable link, but if the anchor isnt a blcok element it seems to miss the link half the time.
