We have a web application that users access simply via the PlayBook's browser. In one case, we will be giving out customized PlayBook devices and would like to pre-load a large library of files like PDF, movies, Word docs onto the device's storage.
The problem is that there's no easy way to link to the files from the web browser that's easy for the user to use. Any "file://" links don't work -- when the user presses the link, nothing happens.
The user can open the file by holding their finger on the link, waiting for the pop-up menu to appear and select "open in new window". This opens a new browser tab and also then launches the file in the right viewer (Acrobat Reader or Documents to Go), but then the user is left with an empty white tab in the browser. This finger-hold behaviour is hard for untrained users and the leftover tab is a poor experience. This is tested on several versions inlcluding the latest 2.0.1 PlayBook OS.
Does anyone know of a trick we could use in the HTML to link to the files to get them to open that would only require a normal press on a link?
